Ever wonder why a Catholic church is often the most dominant building in so many San Francisco neighborhoods? The photo below is from October 7, 1961 at the Polo Field in Golden Gate Park. An estimated crowd of 500,000 Catholics gathered for a rosary crusade. In just several years, this same venue would host numerous rock concerts, but I don't think they ever packed them in like this.
