The Pony Express of 1860 delivered a letter from St. Joseph, Missouri to San Francisco, California, at the blistering speed of 1800 miles in 10 days and with 100 change of horses. The letters would be loaded onto a steam boat in Sacramento or Oakland, and ferried to San Francisco. What killed the Pony Express after barely 18 months? The first transcontinental telegraph signal of October 21, 1861. But the legend lives on. ( Plaque seen near Broadway & Embarcadero, SF).
