There was a time, long before mp3s, where if you wanted to hear music, you better be a musician -- or know one. In many homes there was a piano, violin, accordion, or guitar... And when a popular song came out, you went down to the music store and bought the sheet music so you could learn to play it.
Below is framed sheet music from the 1894, 1915 and 1939-40 San Francisco Expositions. They often sponsored competitions to write the official theme song for major civic events. And the graphics on the covers are great.
