The USS Pampanito WWII fleet submarine tied up at Pier 45 survived a half dozen war patrols, and the 3/4's of a century since then. A crew of approximately 100 men lived and worked in impossibly tight quarters. The Pampanito sank and damaged almost a dozen enemy ships, and they rescued 73 POWs. The sub is open to the public for a modest admission; it's history brought to life. Here are photos from my recent tour.
