Diego Rivera. Renowned for his colorful murals that often celebrated the industrial worker. He completed this well-known mural in one month during 1931, at the height of the Great Depression.
Title: The Making of a Fresco Showing the Building of a City
Rivera included himself in the mural, with his backside to the viewer -- he's the central figure at chest level to the heroic worker, supervising his fellow artists. Diego was married to an equally talented artist, Frida Kahlo -- in fact they wed at San Francisco City Hall. The mural can been seen in the Diego Rivera gallery of the SF Art Institute. The school was established in 1871, and moved to its present location in 1926. The Institute has a definite monastic vibe; it's a blank canvas waiting for artistic inspiration.
