This Is What Insurance Looks Like.

San Francisco learned in 1906, in a major earthquake the pipes that deliver the city's water may break. So SF created a series of below street-level cisterns, self-contained water tanks holding many thousands of gallons of water. They are spread throughout the city's neighborhoods. You can identify them by the ring of bricks that encircle the access manhole cover.
