A few hundred self-appointed cultural police in black hoodies pulled down several statues in Golden Gate Park on Friday night -- including the bust of Ulysses S. Grant. Abraham Lincoln signed a piece of parchment that freed the slaves: General Grant, with his defeat of the Confederate army, made sure that piece of parchment meant something. If Grant had succeeded Lincoln, instead of Andrew Johnson, we'd be living in a much more equitable country today. As President, Grant created the Department of Justice, and prosecuted the Klan. Ulysses S. Grant was very much a mixed bag. But on balance I believe his life should be celebrated. Father Junipero Serra and Francis Scott Key? Not so much.
Sunday afternoon in Golden Gate Park.
