The construction of the Golden Gate Bridge was innovative for many reasons, including its focus on worker safety. This included a safety net that stretched the length of the span. Over the course of the project, it saved dozens of lives. Men who fell into the net became known as members of the "Halfway To Hell" club.
With the safety net in place, workers moved more quickly and confidently. This helped bring in the Golden Gate Bridge ahead of schedule and under budget. Afterward, they even sold the public pieces of catwalk and netting as souvenirs.
