The Dying Embers Of An SF Tradition.

For young locals, Ocean Beach late-night bonfire parties were something of a rite-of-passage. Today, they are only allowed in a certain area (basically the width of Golden Gate Park, between Fulton & Lincoln) during certain times, and in certain city-provided pits. To be fair, many abused the bonfire privilege, hauling pallets, and even nearby wooden benches, to throw onto the fire. Leaving behind charred nails, ashes and broken bottles in the sand. The truth is, the authorities, local and federal, would like to outlaw bonfires all together - not unlike the off-leash dog situation. So enjoy the warm glow while you can.
