Mayan-inspired Art Deco, who knew? This is 450 Sutter, known locally as "The Medical Building." Designed by San Francisco architect Timothy L. Pflueger, this 26-story treasure has been serving the medical-dental community since 1929. Supposedly the Mayan designs at the top of the ceiling are outlined in red as a nod to their ritual of blood sacrifice. An interesting choice in a medical building. When after many decades cigarette smoking was finally prohibited in the lobby, it was thoroughly cleaned, but a section of dingy tar residue was left on the ceiling as a visual reminder of the health effects of smoking.
