Staying Warm, Dry, and Cultured.

I escaped the biblical weather -- looking at you Noah -- by heading over to the Legion of Honor. They were between major exhibits; John Singer Sargent (in Spain) is next up on February 11th. But the permanent collection by now feels familiar and reassuring.

The Talleyrand Bed, made for some French prince in 1805. They better rope it off quick.



The surrounding Lincoln Park golf course was closed. (It's on the grounds of a former gold rush era public cemetery. Here is a monument " of the seaman's last earthly port and resting-place in which he awaits the advent of the great pilot for his eternal destiny."


A ceramic exhibit by Michelle Erickson. She combined historical and new casting techniques to create contemporary themes.

The combination of the stoic stare and the Barnum-and-Bailey outfit make me laugh.

A mounted vase, estimated date 1756. French.

Hey, I didn't need to come inside for scenes like this today. "The Thunderstorm," 1641.

Snuff & stuff boxes.


Just your run-of-the-mill cabinet, out of Paris, France circa 1650. The exterior is carved with scenes from the Old Testament designed to reflect good government. Inside, a "theatrical tableau" tells the legendary story of the wisdom of Solomon. Plus more than 30 drawers.
