The towering 20-foot-tall "Goddess of Progress" ruled from her perch atop the dome of the Old City Hall. The imposing building was badly damaged by the 1906 earthquake, but miraculously the statue survived intact. It was safely removed from its heights, but during transit the figure fell from the wagon and broke her head off. Her 700-pound head. She saw a bit of the city over the years, from decades in a private citizen's basement, to a stint in Golden Gate Par. Despite the loss in stature, her bronze head sits regally on display in the new city hall, providing an elegant link to SF's historic past.
