John Singer Sargent was born in Florence, Italy to American parents in 1856. He was really in his element when he would travel to Spain for months at a time. The scenery, the people, the culture. Here are some outtakes.
Portrait of Aesop, as in Aesop's Fables.
The avant garde headdresses? Mosquito netting.
Impressive play between light and shadow here.
Portraits to pomegranates, oils to watercolors. Sargent had an artistic range.
Convalescing soldiers.
Blind Musicians.
Where does the boat end, and the water begin?
A painter is not getting out of Spain without religious imagery. This study is Saint Theresa.
La Carmencita, 1890 This full length portrait was the centerpiece of the exhibit. Sargent had seen her dance at a music hall in New York City. The exhibit included a short looped silent film clip of her dancing. How rare is it to see an artist's inspiration in motion from over a century ago? (Video below)
