The first photo shows Larsen Park on 19th Avenue in the mid-1970's. The children's playground featured a decommissioned navy fighter for the kids to climb. (The park had 3 different surplus warplanes over the years.) This is an actual U.S. Navy Intruder, complete with landing gear, buried up to its fuselage in the sand. Many a child endured a minor burn from the sunbaked aircraft aluminum, or banged their head on the leading edge of a wing. And despite its romanticized reputation, sand is not soft. Especially if you fall on it from several feet up. The second photo shows the recent Dr. Seuss-inspired jet fighter art installation now at Larsen Park. As you can see, the kids are much safer today. Divorced from reality, but safer.
