Roosevelt Middle School at Geary and Arguello. Built in 1930, she was 121,000-square-feet of unreinforced masonry. AKA -- brick. A surprising choice of building material only a generation after the 1906 Earthquake. The Quake had dramatically illustrated the shortcomings of brick architecture: strong but brittle. This imposing building has now been brought up to modern earthquake codes, its systems have been updated, and it is a stunning piece of design and craftsmanship. It houses approximately 700 students.
