This master woodcarving was based off the Francis Scott Key monument in Golden Gate Park . It was carved by craftsman Fredrick William Heckmann in 1890. Key was an amateur poet that wrote the words that became the lyrics that became the anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner." The actual monument is in the music concourse of GGP. In it, Francis Scott Key sits about 12+ feet off the ground, so this is the first good look I've had of him. (SF Historical Room, 6th floor, SF Main Public Library.)
