Now For Something Completely Different... Treasure Island, 1939.

Treasure Island, named after Robert Louis Stevenson's novel of the same title, sprang full-blown from the Bay, completely manmade. AKA, "Magic Isle." Anything was possible, all you had to do was look to the east and west: the brand new landmark Golden Gate Bridge and SF-Oakland Bay Bridge. The 1939 Golden Gate International Expo was hosted on Treasure Island, so popular it extended its run into 1940. It featured everything from revolutionary technology like the Pan Am Clipper airliner, to the risque entertainment of Sally Rand's Nude Ranch. The imaginative pencil-and-ink musical note artwork shown here were souvenirs from the Expo. Each an original 1930's piece of artwork.
