This video is looking down on the catch basin of Sutro Baths at Lands End, SF. The baths opened in 1896, and were comprised of several individual baths, and one large L-shaped pool. All completely encased in a massive steel and glass structure. Each day the ocean water was entirely replaced, and both filtered and heated. The L-shaped pool was ocean temperature, and the smaller pools were heated in increments, each 10-degrees warmer than the last. In high tide conditions, the 1.8 million gallons could be replaced in about an hour. In less favorable tidal conditions, there was a generator-powered pump that could do the job over several hours.
Today all that is left of the baths are the assorted ruins. But they are the most beloved and enjoyed of ruins.
