During the Cold War, the Bay Area was high on the Soviet Union's list of potential U.S. targets. Our large population, military bases and research centers guaranteed Soviet focus on the region. Defensive Nike missile sites were installed around the Bay Area, including at Fort Funston. Backyard bomb shelters, classroom duck-and-cover drills and Civil Defense geiger counters were all part of the wishful thinking that we could survive a massive ground-zero attack.
