Ed Hardy: Deeper Than Skin, a new exhibit now at the de Young Museum. Ed knew what he wanted to do from an early age. At 11-years-old he was giving the neighborhood kids temporary tattoos -- for a price. Later he would turn down a scholarship to Yale to pursue his tattooing.
Previously, tattoos had been somewhat crude, generic and suspect. Ed helped take it to a whole new level. Extremely personal, realistic, colorful and creative. He was heavily into dragons and skulls. Later he would travel to Japan to immerse himself in the culture and their approach to tattooing. He would meld American and Japanese images to dramatic effect.
The following are some outtakes from the show. But there's much more at the exhibit, including the chance to have a tattoo, through virtual reality, applied onto your arm.
