It's not your classic movie palace, but it is a unicorn: A small independent movie theater in San Francisco. This is the 4Star on 23rd Avenue & Clement. It opened in the 1920's, basically in the silent film era. It's bobbed and weaved its way to survival through almost a century. It has two small screens, one of about 200 seats, the second one about 50 seats. It plays an eclectic movie program, but always seems to be showing one of the latest and greatest. Family-run and neighborhood-famous for their popcorn. A couple doors down a longtime open parking lot is now rapidly becoming a 4-story tall wall of condos. If you get a chance, see a movie at this old-time theater soon. You may not get a chance later.
